Sex and the City Review (A Guy's Perspective)

Sex and the City Movie

First things first: as a guy who saw the movie, the Sex and the City movie wasn't all that bad. I was in a group of nine other women (lucky me) and also in turn, in a theatre with five other guys, three with "opposite" lifestyles, if you catch my drift. I really didn't know what to expect since I've caught television episodes here and there over the past year to give me the basic drift of what is going on. I knew that Big screwed Carrie over; Charlotte and Harry were adopting a Chinese girl; Miranda and Steve seemed to have a normal married relationship complete with problems; and Samantha continued to be Samantha.

Good Stuff

The recap at the beginning of the movie was a good intro to catch everyone up and that launched into Carrie's signature narration. What I really enjoyed about Carrie was that she seemed disconnected from her TV self and was wittier and funnier. Sarah Jessica Parker (though a little weathered in some scenes) did a great job of displaying emotions deeper than she previously had to. Most of the movie centered around Big and Carrie's nuptials and issues associated with planning a progressively large wedding. The other girls got their time in with their side stories that relied on the friendships between them to get through. There are scenes with all four girls and scenes with just a couple of them and scenes that developed single plotlines and they were interspersed well to keep the movie flowing.

Many feared the two-and-a-half-hours timeframe of Sex and the City, but it was paced well. It was actually like watching four or five episodes. If you paid attention, you can tell where it would have broken up as an episode, which is pretty much where Carrie narrates. A true, hardcore fan (which was 98% of the theatre) will probably not notice the time.

The soundtrack is excellent. Check out my review of the soundtrack. The songs are well placed and if you have heard the soundtrack before seeing the movie, you will have a new appreciation of the songs. For example, I was on the fence about liking the Mairi Campbell song, "Auld Lang Syne", but because it was inserted in the movie at the most perfect moment, I found that I loved the song after.

Bad Stuff

I found no point in Jennifer Hudson's scenes. She gets hired somewhere near the middle of the movie to be Carrie's assistant. Hudson is not a very good actress. I'm sorry, but she isn't. In the scenes that included Hudson, she was cheesy because I felt her voice isn't suited for...well, acting. She is appropriate for broadway and that's it.

There were a couple of lulls in the movie where there was no funny lines or story advancement (which was most of Hudson's scenes). Those are few and far between as most of the scenes segue well into each other, but there are lulls.

For the Guys

If you are a guy thinking about seeing Sex in the City, I feel that you should. There are a couple of scenes that are worth it. Besides the scenes with Samantha having sex, there is a great scene where she gets naked and puts sushi on strategic spots on her body (use your imagination) in anticipation of her boyfriend coming home. The point is that she is naked and has sushi on her privates. What's not to love? The second best scene is Charlotte, in all her pristine glory, drinks some water in Mexico and um, eventually has a moment of urgency. That's all I'm saying.

The other scenes guys will like basically are the ones where there is sex. As mentioned before, there are some funny lines and goes beyond the romantic comedy. It a nice story about friendships and being there for one another.

Final Word

From a male perspective, Sex and the City is worth at least one watch, even if you hate the TV show or think that you won't know what's going on because you've only seen a couple of shows. Now, last thing's last: Sex and the City wasn't all that bad.

The movie producers themselves couldn't have written a better review than this. Very nicely done. I'd still rather be rolled up in barbed wire and tossed off a cliff than have to sit through two and a half hours of that movie though. None the less, you did it justice. Nice job.

Nice to see a guy addressing a chic flick! And you didn't hate it! I was a mediocre fan of the TV show, but admire Sarah Jessica Parker for pushing through this project. In the entertainment biz, you gotta make the money when and where you can...if this movie makes a nice profit, maybe she can 'lay low' and be the mother and wife she says she wants to be. For myself, I'm looking forward to the Mamma Mia! chick flick later this summer!

I agree, the pacing and the length were perfect and you could see where each chapter would break up. Honestly I am such a fan of these gals I kept hoping the movie would not end. I hear there may be a sequel and I hope this is not just talk. Thanks for the interesting hub.

I am glad you enjoyed the movie. As a woman who dragged her boyfriend to the movie, I am glad to know that maybe he enjoyed it...oh wait it was you!!! And I want to go see it again :) I won't make you go this time... But as someone posted above, Momma Mia is coming soon...

When we had HBO, we watched the show regularly. However, I have little desire to see the movie. I just can't get excited about seeing the TV actors transition to the big screen.

I will say, the sushi did peak a little more interest. If my wife wants to go, I will.

Whats up Greg, I finally signed up. I enjoyed reading this review, and realize that the movie may not be the male's nightmare we all thought it would be. Once I figure out the website, I will write my first review on Zohan. See you at work in a couple of weeks bro, I'm going to South Carolina in about 18 hours.

Very brave of you to write this critique...my husband watched the movie with me (I sort of forced him). I don't think he was thrilled, although he could have just been "holding that in" thinking guys aren't supposed to like this movie. When ever I got him to watch the shows with me, he always did get a chuckle out of them! I love the movies (parts one AND two), but then I am a die-hard fan! And yea, Jennifer Hudson's part...booorrring!
