Sex and the City Soundtrack Review

Sex in the City

For an eclectic collection of music, the Sex and the City soundtrack delivers. You can get your dose of hip hop, R&B, rock, dance and even some independent music to satisfy the finicky of tastes. Each song personifies an aspect of Sex in the City like fashion, sex, or anything New York.

Track 1: Labels or Love--Fergie

Typical Fergie with infectious beats and catchy chorus. "Love is like a runway" is the main theme of this song, with references to big names in fashion like Gucci and Diorre. This song is best played as the four ladies of Sex in the City parade through a club.

Track 3: The Look of Love--Nina Simone

This is a nice and smooth jazzy dance number with Nina Simone's alluring low voice. It's a Madison Park/Lenny remix, and fits in well with the Sex and the City universe.

Track 4: New York Girls--Morningwood

Morningwood was a hit on Myspace and their independent rock sound is catchy, much like Fallout Boy permeated your mind. Although the super hard rock breaks in this song get annoying, the flowing middle keeps you going.

Track 2: All Dressed in Love--Jennifer Hudson

As Carrie's assistant, Jennifer Hudson is all right as an actress. Her singing is less than all right. She still carries that American Idol sound that makes you think you're on Broadway, no matter what she's singing. "All Dressed in Love" sounds no different.

Track 5: All this Beauty--The Weepies

Wait a minute? The Partridge Family? Nope, that's The Weepies. Straight out of the 70's they bring their happy sunshine music to the Sex and the City soundtrack. Warning: this song may be too happy for some.

Track 6: I Like the Way--Kaskade

Kaskade lends his techno style to make "I Like the Way", another smooth track to just groove to. Not as jazzy as The Look of Love, but you can still close your eyes to this one and let it hit your soul. "I like the way your move, side by side". Which lady will you move side by side with? Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, or Samantha?

Track 7: It's Amazing--Jem

A great piano introduction sets It's Amazing off to an electronic pop song. Britney Spears beats and music with Norah Jones' voice makes a good combination. By the way, the chorus is "amazing".

Track 8: How Deep is Your Love--The Bird and the Bee

The vocals are outstanding on this song. A simple piano and powerful voice...not much more to say. Easily the best song on the soundtrack.

Track 9: The Heart of the Matter--Indie.Arie

A great remake. This song has been playing on all the trailers and overlays the Sex and the City website. India.Arie's does a good job resinging this classic song in an updated pop version.

Track 10: Auld Lang Syne--Mairi Campbell and Dave Francis

The soundtrack pits four songs in a row (includes the next song) with powerful women singers. Dave Francis plays an acoustic guitar while Mairi Campbell belts out the familiar lines of "Auld Lang Syne".

Track 11: Kissing--Bliss

An exceptional pop ballad. Honestly, Kissing is something you hear in an Olive Garden, but that's not an insult on the song. It's a nice song about how kissing should make you feel.

Track 12: How Can you Mend a Broken Heart--Al Green with Joss Stone

Not the best Joss Stone duet, but classic Al Green, thought you can hardly hear the lyrics. The slowest song on the soundtrack but it bests the Jennifer Hudson song.

Track 13: Walk this Way--Run D.M.C. with Stephen Tyler and Joe Perry

This song needs no review. Everyone knows this song and if you don't, get to know it. It's a great 80's combination of rap and rock.

Track 14: Sex and the City Theme--The pfiefer Broz. Orchestra

A slightly jazzier version of the theme with a little James Bond-esque strings thrown in at the beginning. It still retains all the original, famous sounds like the downtrending xylophone.

Great Selection of Music

Whoever selected the music did a fine job of getting a good variety. Take out or replace All Dressed in Love and How Can You Mend a Broken Heart and you have a fine soundtrack representing scenes in the movie that actually matter and not just songs randomly picked from VH1's Bag of Cool Songs.
